Climate Change and Tourism in Tuscany, Italy. What if heat becomes unbearable? AgEcon
Cai, Mattia; Nunes, Paulo A.L.D.; Ferrise, Roberto; Moriondo, Marco; Bindi, Marco.
This paper investigates the empirical magnitude of climate conditions on tourist flows in Tuscany, exploring the use of a fine spatial scale analysis. In fact, we explore the use of an 8-year panel dataset of Tuscany’s 254 municipalities, examining how tourist inflows respond to variation in local weather conditions. In particular, as the area enjoys a fairly mild Mediterranean climate, our analysis focused on temperature extremes at key times of the tourist season, i.e., on maximum summer temperature and minimum winter temperature. Separate analyses are conducted for domestic and international tourists, so as to test the differences in the preferences among these distinct groups (or types of demand). Estimation results show the impact of climate change on...

INSTITUIÇÕES AMBIENTAIS E DESMATAMENTO NA AMAZÔNIA LEGAL BRASILEIRA: UMA ANÁLISE EXPLORATÓRIA EM NÍVEL DE MUNICÍPIO AgEcon
Araujo, Paulo Thadeu M.; Melo, Andrea S.S.A..

Political Mergers as Coalition Formation AgEcon
Weese, Eric.
Political coalition formation games can describe the formation and dissolution of nations, as well as the creation of coalition governments, the establishment of political parties, and other similar phenomena. These games have been studied from a theoretical perspective, but the resulting models have not been used extensively in empirical work. This paper presents a method of estimating political coalition formation models with many-player coalitions, and then illustrates this method by estimating structural coefficients that describe the behaviour of municipalities during a recent set of municipal mergers in Japan. The method enables counterfactual analysis, which in the Japanese case shows that the national government could increase welfare via a...

Soybean yield estimation by an agrometeorological model in a GIS Scientia Agricola
Berka,Luciana Miura Sugawara; Rudorff,Bernardo Friedrich Theodor; Shimabukuro,Yosio Edemir.
Agrometeorological models interfaced with the Geographic Information System - GIS are an alternative to simulate and quantify the effect of weather spatial and temporal variability on crop yield. The objective of this work was to adapt and interface an agrometeorological model with a GIS to estimate soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] yield. Yield estimates were generated for 144 municipalities in the State of Paraná, Brazil, responsible for 90% of the soybean production in the State, from 1996/1997 to 2000/2001. The model uses agronomical parameters and meteorological data to calculate maximum yield which will be penalized under drought stress. Comparative analyses between the yield estimated by the model and that reported by the Paraná State Department of...

The French Way of St. James as an Engine in the Invigoration of Rural Municipalities in Galicia Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Urrutia,Ximena Alexandra Morales; Urrutia,Diana Cristina Morales; Larenas,Patricio Carvajal; Urrutia,Elizabeth Katalina Morales; Ocaña,José Miguel.
Abstract: The aim of this study is to analyze the invigorating effect of the Way of St. James in the Galician rural areas. To do so, we have chosen as a territorial scope the 14 rural municipalities that the “French Way” crosses in this Autonomous Community. The utilized data come from the Bank of Municipal Data of Instituto Galego de Estatística (IGE). A double approximation on the impact of this route has been made: on one hand, we analyze the behavior of different socioeconomic variables during the last two decades in the selected municipalities. On the other hand, we examine to what extent a more favorable dynamic has been witnessed in similar rural territories that do not have access to this product. Although the results of the analysis should be...

UNDERSTANDING THE DEMAND SIDE AND COORDINATING THE SUPPLY SIDE FOR CONNECTED GOODS AND SERVICES AgEcon
Ladegard, Gro; Romstad, Eirik.
This paper addresses the coordination and innovation issues needed for promoting value added at the rural and regional level. There are two sides to value added: the ability to meet consumer demand, and to identify least cost ways of supplying the demanded goods. Human and social capital plays an important role on both sides. At the municipality level the supply side issues are complex. First, because the production space has far more dimensions than for the single entrepreneur. Second, because the value of some goods and services produced depend on what other goods and services that is available. On the supply side networks are important to solve the coordination issues, while networks for identifying and understanding consumer preferences are important...
